The sound of the F-15E Strike Eagle melted into the distance, and for the first time in a while, McGregor realized he couldn’t hear gunfire. He turned to his second in command. “Chuck, over here.”

Corporal Chuck Rivera hurried over to his sergeant. “What is it, Mac?”

“We’re deviating from our track,” McGregor said. He took out his map and showed Chuck the coordinates. “The fast air said there’s an SA-10 site here. We need to find it for them to take it out.”

“A missile launcher on this side of the fence?” Rivera asked disbelievingly.

“Yeah. Get the others ready.”

“Wait, Mac, what about Bravo One team?”

“We have to assume they’re lost, Chuck. That was a trap to bring in fast air, and it worked. They shot one of them down. Listen, try to reach them while I radio our change to Bravo Alpha.”

“Roger that.”

“Bravo Alpha, this is Bravo Two, over.”

“Roger, Bravo Two. Read you Lima Charlie, over.”

“Bravo Alpha, Bravo Two has a change of mission, over.”

“What’s going on, Mac?”

“If you don’t know already, the whole thing was a trap to lure fast air in and take them down with mobile SA-10 launchers.”

“We were monitoring the outcome.”

McGregor said, “One of those is on this side of the fence. The pilot of the surviving bird gave us coordinates to check.”

“What about the other patrol, Mac?” This time it was Holland.

The sergeant looked at Chuck, who shook his head. “Sir, the firing from their location has ceased, and we can’t raise them by radio.”

“That doesn’t mean they’re all gone, Sergeant.”

“Yes, sir, but we’ll need medivacs if we find survivors, and we can’t do that with a missile launcher on our side of the wire.”

“All right, Mac, continue on your new mission. I’ll have A company out in the field within twenty minutes.”

“Roger, sir. Bravo Two out.”

“All right, Chuck, get them moving. You’re on point.”

“Why me?” the soldier asked.

“Because apart from me, you’re the only one I trust to get the job done.”
